Wind is an understatement - Melbourne

Last night I think has been the worst nights sleep so far. There has been 2 other nights similar but not quite the same as this, it was bloody windy.

So much so that the front part of the canvas on the trailer continually was flapping out then smacking me directly on the forehead over the entire night. Not ideal.

We then had to pack up in the wind and try as quickly as possible to get moving without freezing to death...

On the highway east from Torquay to Geelong, & then on to Melbourne I was literally fighting the steering wheel to keep within the lane. I can't remember ever driving in such wind anywhere. We can handle the cold, even the rain, but the wind is so draining, it is just relentless and it is just plain hard to do anything, not to mention it makes it seem a lot colder.

We stopped in Geelong and walked along the foreshore, then had average coffee with a 3 day old muffin. The wind & rain leaves a poor impression of the area although picturing it on a nice day it would be quite nice. They sure do like their Cats down here. The club flag is on every corner and posters are displayed everywhere. We went past Cardinia Park and now Z is a Geelong supporter...

North to Melbourne and it was a still bad weather. Luckily, a colleague from work (Greg & his wife Julie) had asked us to stay when we came through so although sometimes it seems that it is easier just to stay in the Mann Vann, the weather was telling us to take the nice warm large beds on offer....so we did.

Given they were at work Greg said to dump the trailer and recommended the Science Works Museum for the boys just over the Westgate Bridge. It was indoors and out of the cold and great for kids, so we went. Let's just say we had a couple of blowups when we wanted to go, it was great. There was a teacher strike on today so 400 schools were closed - & they had the same idea as we did on where to go. It was busy but it let the boys play with other kids and generally have a ball. Very interactive and even Mum & Dad learnt a few things.

As with everyone who has opened their homes, Greg & Julie were more than welcoming and confirmed that the wind speeds had been recorded at 135klmph in some areas and it the worst it has been in years. They just laughed at the thought of us being in the trailer in this weather. Spacious living here, because they have grand kids and nieces/nephews staying all the time, so essentially we had our own rooms and toilet/shower in an area where we couldn't disturb them. The walls must have been 5 inches thick because there was no noise, and the curtains must have been an inch thick because it was so dark. Central heating, fuseball & billiards for the boys, Foxtel, no wonder they don't want to leave the house. Slightly different to what we have been used to.

A nice barbecue for tea with a few wines and good catch up with Greg. More than glad we came to stay.
