Bay of Fires

This morning was another clear day, not a cloud in the sky and limited wind. If it stays like this then we will not regret the boat ride over and or the decision to come across.

We decided that the best plan of attack was to go to the Bay of Fires first, but through the scenic route via Scottsdale. This is big timber/dairy/sheep country, with magical forests along a slow winding road that goes over Weldborough Pass. It is visual splendour and what we expected from Tazzie. The greens are so deep, the trees so tall and dense, and the views...well they have to be seen to be believed. And we are not in the central high country yet...

Lunch was at Scottsdale in a nice park we found that has been there 85 years. You can free camp and there are toilets, also a playground and a lake full of ducks that will take your bread if there is any on offer. We have had lunches in worse places, that is for sure.

Onward to a place called St Helen's and after a short drive north we found ourselves at the Bay of Fires. We sussed out a free camp that was northernmost to the bay and I guess the start of the greater area, and were overwhelmed with its positioning and the fact that it was FREE.....yes, free. Absolute beach frontage, toilets, secluded and a sheltered heaven is the best description. I was talking to a lady in Torquay that worked for APT Tours for 10 years as a guide and she saw the entire country, and she said that Tazzie has the best free camps anywhere in OZ, she is not wrong. We will like this stay.

A family arrived shortly after from Hobart (it is school holidays for the next 2 weeks) and we got chatting. He tells me the weather is looking good on the east coast for the next week or so, which suits us just fine. We can't believe that there is nobody here, they tell us that summer gets busy here because they are the best beaches in the state, but this time of year most Tasweigans hibernate. This is why they come now because it is quieter.

After dinner we invited them over to the Mannfire I had going and drilled them for the best places to go - which they were more than happy to give up. Like any patriotic individuals, they want visitors to have the best experience in their home state, so we think we are headed in the right direction now.

Looking forward to the next couple of days.
